A RollerCoaster member started a very interesting conversation on our discussion boards, asking fellow parents if they’d let their kids repeat the school year when schools reopen. Would you?
A debate started on a radio show last week, started by a lady giving her opinion, according to the RollerCoaster member, that “children should be offered the opportunity to repeat the school year as a result of how much they have missed due to Covid-19.”
Schools in Ireland were instructed to close their doors in March. The school shut down began on March 12th and since then, school children have been doing their learning from home, with the help of teachers and parents (and Joe Wicks, and RTE..!).

Parents and children are finding their own groove when it comes to managing school work, but some mums and dads are of the opinion that the current education system isn’t quite working. No matter how good a routine they are in, it’s just not school! (And I think a lot of parents are realising that those years of teacher training are entirely necessary!)
The responses to the opening comment on the thread varied, and it seems as though it depends on the class.
Some parents don’t think the school closures will harm primary school students too much, but some people think it’s a good idea, especially for children who started school young.
Other parents think it’s a good idea – as long as they have the choice. Because all children are different and while some can get on just fine at home, it’s inevitable that others will fall behind.
