Every toddler has their moment.

No matter how adorable your little angel is, a toddler tantrum can strike any child at any moment! Here’s how to deal.

As any parent will attest, a toddler tantrum is like taxes: unfortunate, unpleasant, but inevitable. But they’re every parent’s worst (and most embarrassing nightmare).

Even Kim Kardashian and Kate Middleton have come up against a screeching toddler in their time.

We all know about the terrible twos –  but what most parents didn’t bargain for is the ‘threenager’. A three-year-old can start to realise the power they have and articulate themselves much better.

They want to assert their independence and this is when you and your angel may come to blows. And even if your little one knows how to use their voice, they have a long way to go before they understand the concept of ‘no’.

But don’t take it personally. The reality is that they merely haven’t learned to regulate their emotions yet.

It’s all very well knowing why they resort to tantrums, but how can a parent avoid a Defcon Five scenario every time they go to Tesco?

Firstly, distraction is a brilliant tool. If you are in the supermarket, give your child a small list of items that they need to locate themselves, so that they feel as though they are ‘helping’.

You might find that giving your child a small bit of ‘independence’ is a big help. Little ones, for instance, have very set ideas over what they like to wear.

Letting them choose is a good way to let your child have their own way sometimes. It doesn’t really matter if their bottom doesn’t match their top, does it?

If your child is going through a phase, own it and accept it. Tell them as gently as you can that you’re bringing in boundaries, and sometimes things won’t go their way.
